Do You Ever Feel Invisible? If so, You’re NOT Alone

August, 2024

Invisibility in midlife –  feeling unseen, dismissed, or ignored – is an unfortunate reality for many of us. Whether it is walking past a group of men (or women) and realizing they aren’t even acknowledging our existence or our colleagues talking over or around us, it can be a rude awakening. For some, the experience can be crushing or infuriating, and for others surprisingly liberating. Check out the articles below for more positive spins and learn about Jane Austin’s un-invisibility project on the Magnificent Middle Podcast.
Read, listen, and let me know about your experience of invisibility.

Articles:

Sometime In My 50s, I Became Invisible To Men. Here’s What I Didn’t Expect To Feel by Julia Williamson. Fun article in the Huffington Post. The author wrote, “I started to have to say “Hello?” at the register to get the cashier’s attention. As I repeated my coffee order, I could see their eyes moving past me, lighting on younger, bolder, more interesting people. “This is it,” I thought. “I’ve become invisible.” Can you relate?

Society “disappears” ageing women. So I harnessed that cloak of invisibility to do all sorts of ‘inappropriate” things, by Deborah Wood. This article is a little older (like us) but I love how she capitalized on invisibility.

And for balance, uber visibility, and a little revenge, check out these amazing “older” (well old in Olympic standards) athletes, 8 ‘Older” Female Athletes Competing in Paris Who Prove Age is Nothing but a Number.
